Common use cases of D3M's Areas feature
Delineating geographical sites
Defining a phased approach to deployment (Phase 1, Phase 2, etc.)

Areas are useful as they allow you to:
Quickly zoom to a specific section of your diagram when dealing with a large or complex network
Filter equipment, devices, and connections in your Inventory view (by Area)
Filter tabular data, pin, and auto-zoom data in your D3M Documents

Want to add properties to your areas?
Properties can be added to your areas within D3M as well. Changing the colour, weight, and style of the areas border as well as the background are all things that can differentiate areas within a project. Colour coding is a great way to stay organized when dealing with a large and complex project.
To change the colour / border style / border weight of an area, first you need to double click on the area to bring up the "Area Editor". Once in that tab, you can edit its properties.
Creating transparent borders is another great way to use areas within D3M. By creating an area around a group of icons and setting the border to transparent, you can use those areas to navigate around a project without having to scroll move around.
To change your area borders to transparent, double click the area and then select "none" under the border "Style" tab. The areas border will then disappear, however when you hover over an area with your mouse, the area will appear to indicate that it is there.
